About The Book
“The Manipur Political Agency with Special Reference to the Frontier Problem, 1836-1891” delves into the complex political and administrative history of Manipur during a transformative period. The work critically examines the establishment and evolution of the Political Agency in Manipur, exploring its pivotal role in managing the region’s frontier issues and tribal relations. The book provides a detailed analysis of the challenges faced in dealing with frontier tribes such as the Angami Nagas, Kukis, and Lushais, along with the diplomatic intricacies of relations with neighboring Burma. It highlights key historical events, including the early expeditions against the Nagas, the tenure of notable political agents like William McCulloch, and the resolution of Lushai raids. The final chapters focus on the southern and southeastern frontiers, addressing issues with the Kamhows, Suktes, and Chasad Kukis, as well as the eventual stabilization of the Burma-Manipur frontier following the Third Anglo-Burmese War.Drawing extensively from archival records housed in institutions such as the National Archives of India and Assam State Archives, along with contemporary reports and accounts, the book reconstructs the geopolitical dynamics of the era. It also contextualizes the British Residency system’s influence on governance, tribal interactions, and frontier stability. This meticulously researched work fills a critical gap in the historiography of Northeast India, offering valuable insights into the strategic importance of Manipur and the broader implications of British colonial policies on frontier management.
